You are Standing in the Way

August 10, 2020 in Motivational - 4 min read

I am about pose an idea as to what is stopping you from being the person you want to be and having everything that you desire. It’s you. That’s it, you.

Now I know you probably tend to shift blame on exterior circumstances and people around you just so that you can feel better about how things turn out in your life but I am here to tell you that you have to start looking within yourself. Sounds cliché huh? It’s a pretty wild concept to ever consider that you could be the one hindering yourself from being great but listen, those thoughts you have about yourself play a huge role on how your life turns out.

Take this moment to actually think about it. Seriously, when was the last time you had a positive thought about yourself? When last were you proud of your efforts, no matter how small they are? Do you even believe in yourself and the potential you possess? Our thoughts about ourselves control our reality. Do you personally know of anyone who didn’t believe in themselves at all but turned out to be successful? If you do, please tell me more about them, I am genuinely interested.

Stop thinking about how far you have to go to claim that you have ‘made it’. there are levels to this and it’s best to start at the very first level – believing in yourself. Trust me when I say that anything is possible from then on, you become unstoppable because you depend on yourself and yourself only for support when you believe in yourself.

Stop thinking about how far you have to go to claim that you have ‘made it’. there are levels to this and it’s best to start at the very first level – believing in yourself.

People who seek support and approval from friends and family will never start because their source of motivation doesn’t stem from within and family and friends will not be there to push you every single day, you have yourself for that. However, that is very impossible when you don’t believe in yourself. Start there, start by acknowledging that your ideas are valid, start by believing that things will work out in your favor and use that driving force to work on your dreams and goals, even if it’s to lose 2 pounds by the end of the month, you need to believe it will happen first.

Another factor that is holding you back is what you do with your time. I know, I know, social media is pretty addictive, it makes us feel good and inspires us (depending on what experience you go for on social media) but self-discipline is where it’s at. I don’t really set a time limit for myself when it comes to social media, I just stop when I find myself trying to find something to keep me there.

For instance, when I find myself on the search bar on Pinterest or Instagram twiddling my thumbs thinking of what to search (which I do all the time), that’s when I know it’s time to let go and do something productive with my time. So do the same too, whatever it is that makes you procrastinate, identify it and don’t allow it to control you.

The truth is that you actually know what you waste your time on and you are always aware of it, now get yourself to step away. Whether its mindlessly scrolling on social media, binge-watching a series or sleeping, just get ahold of yourself.

The day you realize that you are in control of everything that happens in your life will be the day you change your life for the better. You do not have to keep your friends who are not supportive or don’t have the same mental capacity as you, you don’t have to think about yourself so negatively and become toxic to your own self, you do not have to waste your time on activities that do not contribute to your goals or self-care.

Rest when necessary but always get up when work needs to be done. Your friends making plans with you every day is not what is standing in your way, someone telling you that your idea is not good enough to make it in the industry is not standing in your way either. It’s you! You agreeing to meet up with your friends when you know you have something to work on and you believing negative opinions from others… that is what’s standing in the way of you and success.

Remember to always do what you have to do and be careful to not be hard on yourself either. I recently read a quote on Pinterest and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since then – “The secret to your future is hidden in your daily habit”. Set your priorities straight, this might not be beneficial to those around you but it will to you and the real ones will be there for you on your journey. Now please, get out of your way.
