Pick A Hustle

April 19, 2017 in Articles, Motivational - 3 min read

Doctors and engineers are probably the only people most of us know who can become rich from their 9-5 job. Besides them, who has actually gotten rich working for somebody? So does this mean that since we ain’t about that life (of being a doctor and engineer) we can never afford the lifestyle we always fantasize about? Scary thought. With that thought in mind, I figured it is quite necessary to have a hustle – it might not make you rich but you would afford to pamper yourself now and then.

Discover what you are really into – this is a hard decision to make if you are into so many things. Think about what you would enjoy doing every single day of your life in the near future. It is pretty pointless to target the careers that will only be good to your wallet but you aren’t enjoying it so think of something you would probably never want to retire from.

Break out of the system, start your own businesses. Practically everything we need is all around us nowadays hence if you are going to start something, ask yourself questions like – How will it differ from the rest? What will make your ‘thing’ stand out? What is so unique about it?

Here’s a quick example: You want to start a catering company. How many catering companies do we know of? Millions. So what have you got to offer that others don’t? Maybe you could have menu cards that the guests tick from with all the available options cooked for that event. Maybe each table is served in mini pots hence they dish up for themselves instead of causing commotion when lining up. Maybe you deliver the food to the event in a helicopter even.

Work on you hustle on your spare time. Make it your go-to place – after a beautiful day your hustle should be that one thing you want to turn to, after a terrible day the only thing you should want to do is head over to your hustle. Choose the hustle wisely because you might have to spend a lot of time, energy and money trying to make it work.

Have cheat days, not cheat weeks – abstain from your work for sometime to ‘live’ a little perhaps. Balance things out. If you are still in school, do not make the mistake of making your hustle your priority, well unless you believe that education cannot define you then sure dropout maybe. Nonetheless, those that do value education shouldn’t let their hustle overpower academia.

Build relations with the appropriate people. Set your mind straight. Hustle with people who are also hustling and trying to make their lives better. You are doing this for yourself. All the hard-work that results in having sleepless nights will be worth it at the end. Don’t fear failure – that will be part of your story when you have made it.
